BFT Welding & Fabrication: The Richmond Owner’s Guide
BFT welding and fabrication repair in Richmond typically runs $340-$780 for most swing-arm bracket and hinge rebuilds, with same-day service when the part is in stock on our truck. We carry BFT-compatible weldments for the ARES, PHOBOS, and ELI series operators, and we match the part to your model before any work starts. Most Richmond homeowners notice the problem when the gate starts sagging on the closing stroke or the operator arm pulls away from the post mount, usually after a wet winter or a direct impact.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
BFT operators mount to the gate through fabricated steel brackets and weldments that take the full torque load every cycle. The critical distinction is between the ARES series (residential swing gates, up to 500 kg leaf weight) and the PHOBOS/ELI lines (heavier commercial and industrial swing gates, 800-1,800 kg). ARES units use a single-piece cast bracket with a 12 mm mounting plate; PHOBOS and ELI require a welded gusset assembly with 16 mm plate and a reinforced hinge pin bore.
To identify your bracket, check the stamped model number on the operator housing, then measure the post-mount bolt pattern. ARES brackets pattern at 140 mm × 55 mm; PHOBOS brackets pattern at 180 mm × 70 mm. The ELI 250 BT uses the same footprint as PHOBOS but adds a secondary torque arm bracket that most aftermarket suppliers omit. We stock both the BFT OEM weldment and a certified-compatible fabrication from a supplier we’ve used since 2016, and we’ll show you both options with the part number and origin before you choose.

Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

- Gate sag on the closing arc. The bracket-to-post weld has cracked at the root pass, usually from cyclic fatigue. The gate still moves but drops 15-25 mm at the far end of travel, and the operator strains against the misalignment.
- Operator arm pulling away from the post mount. The mounting plate bolts are tight, but the bracket itself has elongated holes or a torn weld seam. This happens when the gate leaf weight exceeds the bracket rating, often from added decorative ironwork the original installer didn’t account for.
- Grinding or popping at the hinge pin. The fabricated hinge barrel has wallowed out, or the grease fitting has seized and the pin is running dry. In Richmond, the salt air off the Bay accelerates this; we’ve replaced hinge pins on Cutting Boulevard properties that failed in four years where inland they’d last ten.
- Visible rust bloom at weld joints. Surface rust is cosmetic, but rust scaling at the toe of a weld means moisture has penetrated the heat-affected zone. The weld is losing cross-section and will crack under load.
- Gate hits the stop hard or reverses unexpectedly. A shifted or cracked bracket changes the operator geometry, so the limit switch reaches its setting while the gate is still in motion. The operator thinks it’s blocked and reverses, or slams the mechanical stop.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Most BFT welding and fabrication repairs in Richmond fall between $340 and $780 installed. A simple ARES bracket swap with an OEM weldment runs toward the lower end; a PHOBOS gusset rebuild with custom field welding and realignment pushes higher. The range depends on three factors: whether we can bolt on a replacement or must cut and re-weld in place, whether the gate post itself is sound, and whether the operator arm geometry needs recalibration after the bracket is replaced.
Every quote breaks out parts, labor, and any post repair separately. We hand you the written price before anyone picks up a tool, and that number doesn’t change unless we find something we couldn’t see during inspection, in which case we stop and show you before continuing. The work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise, and under Clause 4 of the Haven Standard, you get a photo log of the cracked bracket, the replacement part number, and the finished weld before we leave.
DIY or Call Us?

There’s a short list of things a Richmond owner can safely check: verify the mounting bolts are tight with a socket wrench, look for obvious cracks in the bracket paint, and confirm the gate moves freely by hand with the operator disconnected. What you should not attempt is cutting, welding, or re-machining a loaded gate bracket. These assemblies are under torsion load even when the gate is stationary, and a bracket that fails during repair can drop a 300-pound gate leaf without warning. Field welding also requires proper preheat and electrode selection for the steel grade, or the repair will crack again in months.
We carry the common BFT weldments on the truck, and most inspections take twenty minutes. If the bracket is cracked, we’ll show you the fracture, name the replacement part, and name the price. Call (510) 944-0953 and a live person will pick up.
FAQs
In Richmond’s coastal climate, a properly welded and coated bracket lasts 8-12 years on a residential gate cycled 6-8 times daily. The salt air off San Pablo Bay cuts that roughly in half if the bracket isn’t galvanized or powder-coated after welding. We specify a zinc-rich primer and two-part epoxy on any field weldment to slow the corrosion cycle.
Sometimes, if the crack is in a non-structural gusset and the main load path is intact. We won’t weld a cracked mounting ear or a bracket that has already been repaired once, the fracture pattern is too unpredictable and the liability is on us if it fails. Call (510) 944-0953 and we’ll inspect it at no charge; if it’s repairable, we’ll tell you exactly where and how.
A bolt-on ARES bracket replacement takes 45-60 minutes including operator realignment. A PHOBOS or ELI weldment requiring field cutting and welding runs 2-3 hours, plus cure time if we apply a corrosion coating on site. We schedule the arrival window, not a callback, and we send the technician’s name and photo before dispatch.
We carry ARES and PHOBOS bracket assemblies, hinge pins, and torque arm weldments on the truck every day. ELI 250 BT secondary brackets and custom post adapters we fabricate in our shop and can have ready within 24 hours. If your model is older or imported, bring the part number from the operator label and we’ll cross-reference it before we roll.
