Mighty Mule Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Richmond Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Mighty Mule-compatible keypad and intercom repairs in Richmond, with most completed jobs running $280-$520 installed depending on whether we’re replacing a surface-mount numeric keypad, a wireless intercom station, or both on a dual-access system. Same-day service is available when we have your model’s compatibility confirmed by phone. Most Richmond homeowners discover the failure when the keypad stops accepting the PIN on wet mornings, or when visitors press the intercom call button and nothing reaches the house - even though the gate motor itself still opens with the remote.

Which Mighty Mule Models This Applies To

Mighty Mule has used three distinct keypad and intercom platforms since 2012, and the parts do not cross over. The FM137 surface-mount keypad and the FM136 wireless intercom pair with the FM500, MM560, and MM600 series swing-gate openers. The newer MM-LPS13 keypad and MM-BT intercom module fit the MM271, MM572, and the current MM9333H line. The identifying label is on the back of the keypad housing or under the intercom station’s snap cover, marked with a six-digit date code starting with the assembly year.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha we see most in Richmond: the FM136 wireless intercom will pair with an MM560 motor, but the MM572 uses a 433 MHz frequency while the FM136 broadcasts on 318 MHz. We’ve found aftermarket keypads that claim dual-band compatibility, and some work adequately for keypad-only access. For intercom functions, we source OEM-spec boards or verified equivalents - the audio circuit in Mighty Mule intercoms runs at a non-standard impedance, and generic replacements either produce garbled audio or drain the transformer within months. We stock both OEM and tested aftermarket units on our Richmond service trucks, and we’ll show you the part label before we open the package.

Signs Your Mighty Mule Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

Signs Your Mighty Mule Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing
  • Keypad accepts the code but the gate doesn’t move. This usually means the keypad’s relay output has degraded. The buttons register locally, but the dry-contact closure that signals the control board has worn to the point of intermittent continuity - especially common after Richmond’s winter fog cycles corrode the terminal block.
  • Intercom call button lights up, but no audio reaches the house. The speaker or microphone element in the outdoor station has failed from moisture intrusion. Mighty Mule intercom gaskets are adequate for dry climates; in Richmond’s salt-air environment near the Bay, we’ve seen gasket compression set fail within four years.
  • Keypad works in dry weather, fails after rain. Water has breached the housing seal and reached the membrane circuit. The FM137 is particularly susceptible because the mounting screw holes sit below the circuit board level - a design choice that pools condensation.
  • Intercom produces loud static or feedback. The audio transformer is degrading, or the shielded cable between intercom base and control board has been compromised by rodent damage - we see this along the Richmond Greenway properties where ground squirrels are active.
  • Keypad display is dim or flickering. The backlight inverter or voltage regulator on the keypad PCB is failing. On solar-powered Mighty Mule systems, this often traces to a battery that can no longer hold charge through consecutive cloudy days, not the keypad itself.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Typical Range What’s Included
Keypad replacement (surface-mount) $280-$380 OEM or tested-equivalent keypad, removal of failed unit, terminal cleaning, new weatherproof gasket, programming of up to 25 PIN codes, written record of settings
Intercom station replacement $340-$480 Outdoor station, indoor base or receiver module, pairing and range testing, audio level calibration, photo documentation of wiring
Keypad + intercom combined $420-$520 Both units, integrated testing for PIN-to-intercom handoff, full Haven Standard documentation package
Diagnostic only (if repairable) $95-$125 Full electrical test, moisture intrusion assessment, written findings with photo evidence - credited toward repair if we proceed

The range depends on three factors: whether your existing wiring is intact or needs re-pulling from the gate post to the motor housing; whether we can reuse the existing mounting box or the corrosion has spread to the bracket; and whether you need the expanded PIN capacity of current models or the basic 10-code limit of the original equipment. We deliver a written price before any work starts, under Haven Standard Clause 1. That price is what you pay - no discovery charges, no “while we were in there” additions. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers all keypad and intercom work; if the replacement doesn’t perform as specified, we make it right at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here, and then there’s the point where DIY costs more than it saves.

What you can check safely: verify the keypad has 12-24 VAC at the terminal block with a multimeter; confirm the intercom indoor unit is plugged in and the breaker hasn’t tripped; and inspect the low-voltage wiring for obvious rodent damage or green corrosion at the wire nuts. These checks take ten minutes and require no disassembly of sealed components.

Where DIY goes wrong: programming a Mighty Mule keypad requires entering a factory-reset sequence within 30 seconds of power-up, then inputting the motor’s learn mode - miss the window and you’re starting over. The intercom pairing sequence is model-specific and not well documented in consumer manuals; we’ve been called to Richmond homes where the owner successfully installed a replacement but spent three hours unable to sync audio. More critically, the control board terminals for keypad and intercom sit adjacent to the 120 VAC motor supply. One slip with a metal screwdriver bridges those terminals. We don’t recommend that risk.

We carry Mighty Mule-compatible keypad and intercom units on our Richmond service trucks. Call (510) 944-0953 and we’ll confirm your model match before we dispatch.
